REGULAR MEETING

The Northwest Allen County Board of School Trustees met in regular session on Monday, June 22, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in the Central Office Board Room. Members present: Ron Felger, Paul Sloffer, and Liz Hathaway. Kent Somers and John Hilger were absent. Also present: Chris Himsel, Bill Mallers, Lisa Harris, staff, students, patrons and reporters.

Motions herewith mentioned are unanimous unless otherwise stated.

President Ron Felger called the meeting to order. Motion to approve the minutes of the June 8, 2015 regular meeting as presented by Paul Sloffer; seconded by Liz Hathaway. Motion carried.

I. GRANT/DONATION ACCEPTANCE Brad Zern, Eel River Principal, requested permission to accept a donation from Lyndsay's Allen County Twirlers in the amount of $775.00 to be used for school improvement activities, student programs, staff appreciation, and staff professional development. Jamie Wilkins, Oak View Principal, requested permission to accept the donation of a shredder with an estimated value of $2,600.00 from the Oak View PTO. Barb Ihnen, Perry Hill Principal, requested permission to accept a donation from the Perry Hill PTO in the amount of $2,470.00 to be used for welcome signs and photo boards. Motion to approve by Paul Sloffer; seconded by Liz Hathaway. Motion carried.

J. TEXTBOOK RENTAL Requested approval of the following: Textbook Rental - amended textbook rental charge as enclosed. Motion to approve by Liz Hathaway; seconded by Paul Sloffer. Motion carried.

Chris Himsel asked for thoughts and prayers for the John Hilger family at the passing of his sister-in-law.

SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT

A. PRESENTATION ON CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

Dr. Gloria Shamanoff, Dan Lestinsky, Colleen Sullivan, David Brooks, Joe Meyer, Molly Shoup, and Deb Neumeyer attended the ASCD Conference and and shared some of the things they learned about "Understanding by Design". UbD is a backward design curriculum development process, which is to start with the end in mind and work backwards from there. The conference fees were paid by a DOE grant.

BUSINESS REPORT

A. HEALTH INSURANCE & BENEFITS

Recommended the following:

  • No change in health insurance premiums for the October 1, 2015 renewal with Anthem.

  • Change co-pays per enclosed summary.

  • Renew agreement with Parkview Health for the NACS Health & Wellness Center.

  • Use Unified Employee Benefits to offer payroll deduct voluntary benefits insurance through Assurity Life Insurance Company.

  • Renew the annual Consulting Services agreement with RESutton & Associates, effective October 1, 2015 for $19,000.00.

B. CORPORATION PURCHASES Building Corporation Purchases - $45,767.32 Motion to approve by Paul Sloffer; seconded by Liz Hathaway. Motion carried.

C. CORPORATION PAYMENTS Building Corporation Payments - $298,884.90. Motion to approve by Liz Hathaway; seconded by Paul Sloffer. Motion carried.

Motion to approve claims and payroll, subject to audit, Liz Hathaway; seconded by Paul Sloffer. Motion carried.

Audience Comments: Todd A. Battershell informed the board members of his intent to work with school officials on a donation of a mural on the side of the CHS Band Garage.
