IDOE Dyslexia Screener and Progress Monitoring Guidance Document Questions for 2019-2020 School Year
NACS Website Reporting
1. State the grade(s) and subtest(s) in each grade that were administered prior to the period your school corporation was not in session. Please state the dates school was not in session.
Last day of school on campus: March 13, 2020
School closure: March 16 - June 30, 2020
Remote Learning began: March 18, 2020
Remote Learning ended: May 21, 2020
Kindergarten, first and second grade students at Northwest Allen County Schools were administered the following NWEA Skills Checklist tests: Consonants/Blends/Diagraphs, Letter Identification, Matching Letters to Sounds, Phoneme Identification and Phonemic Awareness subtests. K-2 students were administered the Arkansas Rapid Automatic Naming test to assess RAN and Words Your Way to assess spelling.
Number of students who completed all six subtests of the Universal Screener:
Kindergarten = 521 1st Grade = 558 2nd Grade = 597
2. State the intervention program(s) used or your school corporation planned to use during the previous school year.
Two teacher representatives from kindergarten, first grade, second grade and one literacy interventionalist per elementary building were trained in Orton-Gillingham by IMSE staff during the 2019-2020 school year. The remaining teachers in kindergarten, first grade, second grade, as well as one teacher representative from third grade and one literacy assistant per elementary building are set to be trained in June and July 2020 by IMSE staff.
3. State the number of students who received an intervention, planned to receive, during the previous school year.
Two first grade teachers did implement Orton-Gillingham as a classwide intervention from mid-January until mid-March. The Orton-Gillingham group met three to four times per week for 30 minutes. Forty-seven first grade students participated in the two Orton-Gillingham groups. Twenty of the 47 students who participated in the groups later received a letter home to their parents indicating that they were "at-risk" or "at some risk" for having characteristics of dyslexia.
No Level 1 screenings were conducted during the 2019-2020 school year.
The school district had sent letters to parents indicating that child was "at-risk" or "at some risk" for characteristics of dyslexia. The letter that was sent home to parents asked permission to complete the Level 1 Screener; however, the Level 1 Screener did not occur due to the COVID-19 school closure.
Below are the number of students who would have been assessed as part of the Level 1 Screening in kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades had the school not been closed. It is likely that many of those same students would have then participated in Orton-Gillingham intervention had school not been closed.
4. State the number of students diagnosed with dyslexia up until the time the school corporation was in session (2019-2020 data only).
Total number of students in NACS who demonstrated characteristics of dyslexia = 37
