Apr 2017 Special Edition

All,

We have been working for a while on a better method to protect our students from the objectionable content available on YouTube. Over break, we were able to implement Safe Mode, which blocks students from videos that YouTube has marked as "unsafe". Use the Chrome browser for this to work. If you already have YouTube videos linked in your Canvas courses, click on each one to confirm that it is already considered safe. If it is not, staff have the ability to approve the video for student viewing. All NACS staff have this permission, and the video is then approved for all NACS students who have access to YouTube. (Currently, only grade 6-12 students have YouTube access. Grade K-5 access is still under review.)

This blue bar will appear on videos already approved for NACS students, either by YouTube or by another NACS staff member:

The following blue bar will appear on videos not approved for NACS students. Staff will have the Approve button shown on the right. Click it to authorize the addition of the video for NACS students. Be sure to watch the entire video before approving it, as sometimes the reason it was blocked isn't apparent early in the video.

If you have a channel of your own videos, there is an Approve button at the top of the channel page. Be sure you know the full content of all videos in a channel before using this. If you find an offensive video already approved, let us know via the Help Desk so we can get it reblocked.

This process is new for us also, so please let us know if you have questions along the way. We'll get more details to you as needed, but early reports are that it really is this simple!

Thank you,

Adela
