REGULAR MEETING

The Northwest Allen County Board of School Trustees met in regular session on Monday, March 13, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the Central Office Board Room. Members present: Kent Somers, Liz Hathaway, John Hilger, Ron Felger and Steve Bartkus. Also present: Chris Himsel, Gloria Shamanoff, Bill Mallers, Lisa Harris, staff, and a reporter.

Motions herewith mentioned are unanimous unless otherwise stated.

President Kent Somers called the meeting to order. Motion to approve the minutes of the February 27, 2017 Executive Sessions and Regular Meeting as presented by Liz Hathaway; seconded by Ron Felger. Motion carried.

COMMENDATIONS

Dr. Shamanoff read commendations for the following:

  • Seven Students representing four NACS Elementary Schools will be attending the Big M Math Camp at Ball State University in June 2017. These Students are: Nick Fitch, Hickory Center; Joey Pack, Hickory Center; Hadley Snell, Huntertown; Reed Lewis, Perry Hill; Katelyn Rutsey, Huntertown; Matthew Tarlton, Cedar Canyon and Vincent Derheimer, Huntertown.

  • Carroll High Students Radio and TV 2 Class traveled to Indianapolis for the Indiana Association of School Broadcasters State Competition. Junior David Israbian earned 1st in the state for his music video. Senior Caroline Chastain earned a top 6 finish in the state for TV News Anchoring, and the Studio 415 Christmas Edition show earned a 3rd in the state award in the news magazine category.

  • Carroll Middle School Students recently enjoyed success at the ISSMA Solo and Ensemble contest where two students earned a "Gold" rating. These two students also went to ISSMA State and received a Gold Rating. In addition, two students earned a "Silver" rating and thirteen ensembles earned a "Gold rating.

I. GIFT/GRANT/DONATION ACCEPTANCE Tanya Pickett, Carroll High Assistant Principal, requested permission to accept the Perkins Grant from the Area Vocational Director, Mr. Larry Gerardot in the amount of $36,220.00 to be used for the Career and Technical Education program. Tanya Pickett, Carroll High Assistant Principal, requested permission to accept a Performance Grant from the Indiana Departments of Education and the Indiana Department of Workforce Development in the amount of $17,685.70 to be used for the Career and Technical Education Program. Motion to approve by Liz Hathaway; seconded by John Hilger. Motion carried.

SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT

A. STATE TESTING RESOLUTION Recommended the enclosed State Testing Resolution. Motion to approve by John Hilger; seconded by Liz Hathaway. Motion carried.

BUSINESS REPORT

A. CORBIN ROAD RIGHT OF WAY RESOLUTION Recommended the enclosed resolution to convey real estate along Corbin Road for $37,460 to Allen County through a Warranty Deed for road right-of-way north of Maple Creek/Transportation Center entrance and a Temporary Highway Easement Grant. Motion to approve by John Hilger; seconded by Liz Hathaway. Motion carried.

B. 2017 SUMMER MECHANICAL PROJECTS Requested permission to advertise for bids to be taken on April 18, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the NACS Administration Office for the 2017 Summer Mechanical Projects, which include the Oak View chiller replacement, Hickory Center boilers replacement, and Natatorium boilers replacement projects scheduled for the summer of 2017 through winter of 2018. Motion to approve by Ron Felger; seconded by Liz Hathaway. Motion carried.

Superintendent's Comments: NACS is sponsoring the Northwest Community in Relay for Life on May 6th. Dr. Himsel recognized Riley Lefever, 2013 Carroll High graduate, for being a four-time NCAA Wrestling Champion, earning the Most Outstanding Wrestler award for 2017 Division III Championship, and was named Academic All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Riley is currently a senior at Wabash College studying English specializing in Poetry.
